National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management

Supporting the Fire Services in Ireland

The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM) was set up in 2009. We are a section in the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage who co-ordinate emergency responses and give support to the Irish Fire Service including fire safety promotion.

The NDFEM supports the fire services by updating work and safety guidelines for firefighters, providing a central training programme, issuing guidance on operational and other related matters and providing capital funding support for equipment and priority infrastructural projects.

The NDFEM also works with other government departments and the Local Authorities to form coordinated plans to deal with major emergencies like severe weather or flooding.
